A Schengen visa application is not strengthened by the number of pages in the folder. It is strengthened when every document supports the same clear explanation: who you are, why you are travelling, how the trip will be funded, where you will stay and why you will return to the UK.
The exact checklist depends on your nationality, UK status, destination and purpose. The following structure is a useful starting point for most short-stay applications.
Passport and identity documents
- A valid passport issued within the required period and containing sufficient blank pages.
- Copies of the passport biodata page and relevant previous visas or travel stamps.
- Recent photographs meeting the destination’s biometric format.
- Previous passports where requested or useful to show travel history.
Proof that you live legally in the UK
Non-British applicants usually need evidence of lawful UK residence. This may include an eVisa share-code printout, immigration status evidence, settled or pre-settled status, or another valid permission. Make sure the name and passport details match the current application.
Your UK permission should normally remain valid for the period required by the destination. Check the country-specific checklist rather than relying on a general rule.
Application form

Employment, study or business evidence
Employees commonly provide a recent employer letter, payslips and approved-leave confirmation. Students may need an enrolment letter and attendance evidence. Self-employed applicants may use business registration, accountant documents, tax records or business bank statements, depending on the checklist.
Financial evidence
Bank statements should show ordinary account activity, a credible closing balance and enough funds for the trip. Large unexplained deposits can create questions. If another person is paying, explain the relationship, provide sponsorship evidence and show why the arrangement is genuine.
Accommodation
Hotel bookings should cover the complete itinerary and match the names and dates in the form. For a family or friend visit, you may need an invitation, host identification, address evidence and proof of the relationship.
Transport and itinerary
Provide evidence of the intended journey into and out of the Schengen area, along with travel between countries where relevant. The itinerary should be realistic. Avoid an overloaded schedule that appears designed only to justify an application country.
Travel medical insurance
The policy should meet the destination’s requirements, cover the full relevant period and apply across the Schengen area. Official German guidance, for example, refers to medical cover of at least €30,000 for short-stay applications.

A concise cover letter can connect the evidence. It should explain the purpose, dates, destination order, funding, employment or study position, and any unusual point that needs context.
